Hormone imbalances hindering your weight- loss efforts. Photo, Getty Images. This article was originally published in March 2. June 2. 01. 6. Have you been unable to lose weight even with diet and exercise? No matter how an imbalance manifests on the outside, the internal reality remains the same — many hormonal imbalances lead to difficulty losing weight and an increased risk of obesity. Unfortunately, the most common imbalances can’t be solved by dieting alone. In fact, they can prevent successful fat loss even when great diet and exercise plans are in place. If you haven’t been successful in the past, chances are, one or more the following hormonal imbalances could be your culprit: 1. Inflammation. Digestive disorders, allergies, autoimmune disease, arthritis, asthma, eczema, acne, abdominal fat, headaches, depression and sinus disorders are associated with chronic inflammation, which has become recognized as a root cause of obesity and many diseases associated with aging, like Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and cancer. At the 2. 00. 7 Postgraduate Nutrition Symposium at Harvard University, researchers revealed findings suggesting that inflammation and excess insulin are the major contributors to rising rates of type 2 diabetes and the rising obesity rates of North America. Insulin resistance. Insulin is an essential substance whose main function is to regulate glucose in the bloodstream and allow cells to use it as fuel or stored as fat. When you have insulin resistance, your cells fail to respond properly to insulin, which causes your pancreas to produce and release even more insulin. High insulin levels encourage your body to store unused glucose as fat, and also blocks the use of stored fat as an energy source. High insulin levels, obesity, high lipid levels and insulin resistance all characterize a disorder called hyperinsulinema, which can be a precursor to diabetes. The leading risk factors are being overweight or obese, or leading a sedentary lifestyle. Here are seven ways to improve you insulin sensitivity. Serotonin exerts a powerful influence over our mood, emotions, memory, cravings (especially for carbohydrates), self- esteem, pain tolerance, sleep habits, appetite, digestion and body temperature regulation. When we’re depressed or down, we naturally crave more sugars and starches to stimulate the release of serotonin. Plenty of sunlight, supplementing your diet with a B vitamin, and regular exercise all support serotonin. When we measure our current lifestyle against all the elements necessary for the body’s natural production of serotonin, the prevalence of low serotonin is certainly not surprising. Chronic stress. Under situations of chronic stress — whether the stress is physical, emotional, mental or environmental, real or imagined — our bodies release high amounts of the hormone cortisol. If you have a condition like anxiety, depression, or post- traumatic stress disorder, or if you have a digestive issue such as irritable bowel syndrome, you can bet your body is cranking up your cortisol. Through a complicated network of hormonal interactions, elevated cortisol results in a raging appetite (specifically cravings for carbs), belly fat and a loss of hard- won muscle tissue, elevated blood sugar, and visceral fat storage. Did you know that workplace stress can be as toxic to your body as second- hand smoke? Check out some tips to stay calm and beat stress. High estrogen. Researchers have identified excess estrogen (in both sexes) to be a risk factor for obesity. Researchers have found that estrogen receptors in the brains of animals are responsible for controlling foo intake, energy expenditure, and body fat distribution. There are two ways to accumulate excess estrogen in the body: we either produce too much of it on our own or acquire it from our environment or diet. We’re constantly exposed to estrogen- like compounds in foods that contain toxic pesticides, herbicides and growth hormones. A premenopausal woman with estrogen dominance will likely have PMS, too much body fat around the hips and difficulty losing weight. Menopausal women may experience low libido, memory loss, poor motivation, depression, loss of muscle mass and increased belly fat. Click here to find out how estrogen may be making you gain weight. Low testosterone. Testosterone enhances libido, bone density, muscle mass, strength, motivation, memory, fat burning and skin tone in both men and women. When testosterone is low, an increase of body fat and loss of muscle may still happen — even with dieting and exercise. Testosterone levels tend to taper off with age, increased obesity and stress, but today men are experiencing testosterone decline much earlier in life — an alarming finding, considering low testosterone has been linked to depression, obesity, osteoporosis, heart disease and even death. Dr. Mitchell Harman, an endocrinologist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, blames the proliferation of endocrine- suppressing, estrogen- like compounds used in pesticides and other farming chemicals for the downward trend in male testosterone levels. Phthalates, commonly found in cosmetics, soaps and most plastics are another known cause of testosterone suppression. Hypothyroidism. Without enough thyroid hormone, every system in the body slows down. Those who suffer from hypothyroidism feel tired, tend to sleep a lot, experience constipation and weight gain typically occurs. Extremely dry skin, hair loss, slower mental processes, feeling cold, brittle hair, splitting nails, infertility, poor memory, depression, decreased libido and an inability to lose weight are also symptoms to watch for. Drinks and Diabetes - What Can I Drink? When choosing what to drink, there are a couple of main considerations relevant to your diabetes to take into account. The first consideration is whether, or how much, the drink will affect your blood sugar levels. The other main consideration, which will be relevant to all of us to some degree but of particular relevance for those of us watching our weight, is to consider the calorie content of drinks. Water. You can’t go too far wrong with pure water. It provides the hydration your body needs and is, of course, zero carbohydrate and zero calories. Milk. Moderate carbohydrate content which may need to be accounted for, particularly in people with type 1 diabetes, if drinking close to or more than 1. Milk tends to be a good source of energy and people that wish to watch their weight will need to take into account the calorie content of milk. Skimmed tends to have around half the calories of whole milk. Squash and cordials don’t carry the nutritional benefits of real fruit juice but can be a lower carbohydrate and lower calorie alternative to sugar soft drinks. Sugary soft drinks. Sugary soft drinks are high in both carbohydrate and calories and generally contain no nutritional value aside from energy, which can lead to taking in more energy than the body needs, or leading to not taking in enough vitamins and minerals. Sugary soft drinks are generally best avoided but can be useful if you specifically need to raise your blood glucose levels, such as before, during or after exercise or to help treat a hypo. Diet soft drinks. Diet soft drinks tend to be popular with people with diabetes as they are low in carbohydrate and low in calories. Diet soft drinks tend to use artificial sweeteners and other artificial agents to provide sweetness, flavour and colour. Whilst soft drinks are recognised as safe for consumption, research has raised some questions over potential health issues and some people may prefer to limit or avoid their exposure to soft drinks as a precaution. Tea. Research into the effects of non- milky tea has identified a range of health benefits, including improving insulin sensitivity and helping maintain healthy blood pressure. Lovers of milk in tea will be disappointed to know that the health benefits generally aren’t realised when milk is added to tea. Coffee. There are probably few foods or drinks that get such a mixture of good and bad headlines as coffee. For example, a single pint of regular beer has 2. Some medications interact with alcohol. It is advisable to check the patient information leaflet enclosed with your medication and consult your doctor if you have further questions. Explore Drinks and Diabetes. Would people have an open mind to really soak in the information I’m about to share? Would I get trolled on by dogmatic breakfast eaters? It’s funny how protective people can be in regards to certain meals. I can’t count the number of times I’ve explained why I get my clients to delay their breakfast eating only to be met with the same objections and myths surrounding this topic. Regardless of my “fears” of posting this article, I decided to do it for one reason: Skipping breakfast has been the master key I’ve used to to creating and maintaining a lean body for myself as well as my clients. Ever since I’ve found out about Intermittent Fasting it’s begun to free me from feeling as if I MUST eat first thing in the morning. This may not sound like a big deal but you’ll find out why it’s been a game changer later on in this post. Now I know what you might be thinking, “Isn’t breakfast the most important meal of the day?“Yes it is but it’s not what you think. If you are still interested then please read on. Like a switch goes off in your body signalling to your fat stores that just by eating this one meal first thing in the morning will keep you lean forever. They are told by pundits that eating breakfast first thing in the morning “starts your metabolism” and has you burning off fat faster than than Kobayashi at a sausage eating contest. But, if eating breakfast was so important to maintaining a healthy weight and lean body then why do studies show that 9. American population (1) already eat breakfast first thing in the morning. I was still at the same body fat percentage after a month of breakfast eating. I still had the same body. It actually wasn’t until I started skipping breakfast strategically that I started to shed off the fat and be able to easily maintain a lean body. I just made a small change (that I’ll be revealing later) to my morning meals that pretty much set me up for success for the rest of the day. People who eat breakfast tend to have a lower risk of many health conditions, studies have shown. Here's a look at the research showing why you should not skip the. Look, not everyone is a “breakfast eater” and chances are you are probably are not an inherent breakfast eater either. You most likely trained yourself to become hungry first thing in the morning just like I did. The Biggest Myths About Skipping Breakfast. I’m pretty sure you still have your reservations in regards to breakfast skipping, which I can understand because I was in the same boat as you were. My job here is to help alleviate your fears so in the end you can make a rational decision to see if this could fit your lifestyle. With that being said; the reason why you may still have some reservations is because of what you have heard or been told about skipping breakfast is either not true and/or highly exaggerated. I’ll let you know that I have nothing to sell you and I have nothing to gain by revealing these myths to you. Ninja Note: This blog post is not against breakfast eating in any way, shape or form. We’ve gone at length to discuss this in our Intermittent Fasting article but it needs to be said again: You can’t eat your way to a better metabolism. Your metabolism relies on exercise and movement. The groups were control, diet only, diet + cycling, diet + resistance training, and diet + resistance training + cycling. This Is Exactly What You Need to Eat For Breakfast to Lose Weight. It's Full of Fat and Helps You Lose Weight. Nuts are chocked full of healthy nutrients. Knowing how to make them part of your diet can help you reap all kinds of. The diet + resistance training + cycling group gained strength, reduced fat mass, and increased VO2 max. This was the only group to attain all three of the above goals. Interestingly enough, even those these women were only consuming 6. It is worth mentioning that the women were able to get these results training for only 3. What this study shows is that even when following a highly restrictive diet for 3. Starvation mode is largely a myth and you’d have to work hard to get your body to the point where your metabolism starts to slow down. Myth #2 Breakfast will “kick start your metabolism” first thing in the morning. Again this is building upon the myth that foods and eating have a direct effect on your metabolism. There are two schools of thought on this: On one hand you have fitness experts like Alwyn Cosgrove who swear that by getting clients who were non breakfast eaters to eat breakfast they most likely start to lose weight. Here’s what he had to say about eating breakfast, which btw was taken from John Berardi’s highly educational Intermittent Fasting book that you can check out here: “9. They don’t eat between 8 PM and noon or 1 PM every day. So they end up fasting between 1. Sure, their diets aren’t very good to start with. But they’re fasting and not getting leaner. In fact, many of them are gaining fat.“When we add in a healthy breakfast within 1. I don’t know if eating breakfast helps them control hunger, leading to fewer total calories eaten later in the day. I’m not completely sure. Maybe there are other metabolic or nutritional differences that help here too. All I know is that stopping the fast first thing in the morning kicks off a host of positive changes for these clients. It works every time. In the real world.” – ACTo which I replied the other side of the proverbial breakfast coin: “Based on the last point I believe it is the fact that Alwyn had them eating a healthy breakfast as the first meal of the day. In the past their first meal of the day was probably a danish or something fast that was processed and quick (ie. Just having a good meal at the beginning of the day could have set the context to have good meals for the rest of the day. They are also under a nutrition program that is supposedly restricting calories in the first place so is it really the “break- fasting” in the morning or is it the fact that they are restricting calories and eating healthier options that has lead to the fat loss. The only reason I say this is because I have clients who have (by habit) eaten first thing in the morning immediately drop anywhere from 3 to 5 pounds (one girl lost 1. On the other hand I have experienced numerous times with our clients where they would lose weight by skipping breakfast and delaying it until 1. Ninja. So which one is right? Both of them. Don’t get me wrong because I still believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day . Remember, every diet is a high- fat diet, because if you’re losing weight, you’re burning your own fat. And fat- burning is most intense in the morning, because we haven’t eaten all night. So when we wake up, we’re already eating a steady diet. If you were anything like me before then maybe you would have freaked out if you missed a breakfast because you was under the impression that your body was shutting down. Thankfully that is not the case. In fact, you’ll be stimulating some of your bodies best fat burning hormones and put yourself in the best fat loss environment just by delaying breakfast by a couple of hours. If you are thinking of starting a breakfast skipping approach into your lifestyle we recommend you do it in small steps. This works best for our clients and allows them to maintain the lifestyle. The worst way to delay breakfast is to just fully throw yourself into it and try to apply all the principles at once. Sure you can start skipping breakfast cold turkey and make it work for but most of the time you must go through a transition period to ensure the best adherence to the plan. So here is your 3 step plan to start adopting a delayed breakfast schedule into your daily routine: 1. Delay breakfast by one hour at a time. If you have been eating breakfast habitually for the past couple of years then adopting a delayed breakfast schedule may be hard to do at first. So I recommend to delay your breakfast by one hour every 1 to 3 days (depending on your mood) until you can get to your desired time. Make your first meal a healthy one. Now the subject of “healthy meals” is just that. Our bodies have went 7 to 8 hours without water so if you feel hungry in the morning it could quite possibly be due to hydration. Drink a coffee or tea in the morning. My best work gets done in the morning and I am usually so productive that I have got through most of my high priority items first thing in the morning. Get Social Support. Sticking to a diet becomes much easier when you have a support team around you. I have a good feeling it could work for you just as it has for myself and my clients.
