What are Lipoproteins? Lipoproteins are special particles made up of droplets of fats surrounded by a single layer of phospholipid molecules. Phospholipids are molecules of fats which are attached to a phosphorus- containing group. They are distinctive in being amphipathic, which means they have both polar and non- polar ends. In a lipoprotein, the polar ends of all the phospholipid molecules face outwards, so as to interact with water, itself a polar molecule. This enables the lipoprotein to be carried in the blood rather than rising to the top, like cream on milk. The non- polar fat balled up inside the phospholipid layer, at the center of the lipoprotein, is thus transported to the place where it must be stored or metabolized, through the bloodstream, despite being insoluble in blood. Thus lipoproteins are molecular level trucks to carry fats wherever they are required or stored. Copyright: Naeblys via Shutterstock, Image ID: 1. Types of lipoproteins. Different lipoproteins are differentiated based on specific proteins attached to the phospholipid outer layer, called the apolipoprotein. This also helps to make the fatty molecule more stable, and also binds to cell surface receptors in some cases, to enable the cell to take up the lipoprotein by receptor- mediated endocytosis. The types of lipoproteins with their function are as follows: Chylomicrons – these are the largest and least dense of the lipoproteins, with the highest triglyceride content. They consist of a protein component synthesized in the liver, which wraps around diet- derived cholesterol and fats. It travels from the intestinal lymphatics to the large veins, and sticks to the inner surface of the tiny capillary blood vessels inside the muscles and the fat storage cells in various parts of the body. There the fat is digested, while the cholesterol remains. This is now called the chylomicron remnant. It travels to the liver, where the cholesterol is metabolized. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the five major groups of lipoprotein. These groups, from least dense, compared to surrounding water, (largest particles) to. Very-low-density lipoprotein is especially harmful because is made up of even more triglycerides, a type of fat, than low-density lipoprotein and thus further. Thus chylomicrons deliver fats and cholesterol from the intestines to the muscles, fat cells and the liver. VLDL, very low density lipoprotein – this is composed of protein, fats and cholesterol synthesized in the liver. It is associated with 5 different apoproteins, namely , B- 1. C- I, C- II, C- III and E. It is converted to IDL and LDL by removal of the apoproteins, except for one called apoprotein B1. They are second only to chylomicrons in the percentage triglyceride content. IDL – intermediate density lipoprotein, is created by the metabolism of VLDL. LDL, low density lipoprotein – this is the last VLDL remnant, and contains chiefly cholesterol. The only apoprotein associated with it is apo. B- 1. 00. Thus all these forms carry fats and cholesterol produced in the liver to the tissues. AST or SGOT. One of the two main liver function blood serum tests (the other being the ALT test). The purpose of this blood test is to detect a recent myocardial. HDL, high density lipoprotein – this has the highest protein: lipid ratio, and so is the densest. It has the apoprotein A- 1. This is also called . High HDL levels are associated with lowered risk of cardiovascular disease. HDL levels are higher with exercise, higher estrogen levels, with alcohol consumption, and weight loss. The importance of lipoproteins. Lipoproteins show varying patterns that correlate with the risk of having a fatal cardiovascular event. High LDL, VLDL and triglyceride levels are associated with a high risk of atherosclerosis and heart disease. High HDL is correlated with reduced cholesterol levels, and a lower cardiovascular risk. Thus a high measurement of apo- A- 1 correlates with a low atherosclerosis risk. HDL levels drop with cigarette smoking, and rise with regular exercise, alcohol use, estrogen levels and weight loss. The lipid profile. An important part of the health evaluation is the lipid profile. This consists of measuring the total plasma cholesterol, the LDL, VLDL and HDL levels, as well as the triglyceride level. These numbers are studied together with other risk factors in your history, to decide whether treatment is required to bring down your cholesterol levels. High cholesterol does not produce any signs or symptoms, so a blood test is essential to evaluate the risk of atherosclerosis. All children should have one lipid profile between 9- 1. Adults without other risk factors should have a blood lipid profile once in 5 years at least. The effect of diet on the lipoprotein profile. A diet high in saturated fat is associated with a high cholesterol level. However, if it contains plenty of fish oils, which are rich in omega- 3 unsaturated fats, the cholesterol and triglyceride levels drop dramatically. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as in olive oil and peanut or sunflower oils, respectively, also reduce the blood cholesterol. References. Further Reading. The Ketogenic Diet and Cholesterol. A common misconception is that because ketogenic diets are high in fat, they must increase cholesterol in your body and clog your arteries. However, much of the recent research shines light on how low- carb diets can optimize your cholesterol levels and in fact improve your heart health. Here we show the most up- to- date research on how different types of cholesterol impact the body and how the ketogenic diet can be a useful tool in maintaining a robust cardiovascular system. Cutting through the Fat: What are Lipids and Cholesterol? Before we can examine the research, we need to understand the roles fat, cholesterol, and carrier molecules called lipoproteins play in the body. Fats, also known as lipids, are a diverse group of molecules with a “non- polar” characteristic that repels water. This means that you if you put a fat such as oil or grease in water they will not mix. In the human body, fats are most commonly found in the bloodstream in one of two forms. The first is triglycerides, a fatty acid that stores energy for later use. These long molecules can be broken down into other fatty acids and glycerol to create fuel for the body. Glycerol can further be broken down into forms of glucose. Elevated levels of triglycerides in your blood can increase your risk of developing diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, and other life- threatening diseases. These molecules have a variety of functions in your body such as building hormones including estrogen and testosterone, maintaining the integrity of cell membranes, and aiding in the absorption of vitamins. Your body produces all the cholesterol you need through the liver and other body cells. Cholesterol is also obtained by consuming animal- based foods such as poultry, dairy, and red meat. Typically, 7. 5% of the body’s cholesterol is produced endogenously (internally) while the other 2. From least dense to most dense, they come in five forms: chylomicrons, very- low- density lipoproteins (VLDL), intermediate- density lipoproteins (IDL), low- density lipoproteins (LDL), and high- density lipoproteins (HDL). Because VLDL, LDL, and HDL cholesterol are frequently used as clinical indicators, we are going to focus on them. It is important to emphasize that while they are often referred to as “VLDL cholesterol”, “LDL cholesterol”, and “HDL cholesterol”, these molecules themselves are not cholesterol; they are cholesterol transporters. What is HDL Cholesterol? HDL cholesterol is frequently known as “the good cholesterol.” In addition to transporting cholesterol around the body, HDL collects cholesterol that is not being used by cells and brings them back to the liver to be recycled or destroyed. By doing this, HDL prevents cholesterol from accumulating and clogging arteries. Thus, elevated levels of cholesterol are integral in maintaining optimal cardiovascular health. Clinically acceptable levels of HDL cholesterol are 4. A recent research study published by De Nardo et al shows that HDL may be responsible in reducing inflammatory activity by regulating immune system cells called macrophages. However, there is general consensus among clinicians and scientists that HDL- cholesterol is healthy for the body and that higher levels of HDL- C are healthy for the body. For many years, physicians have used drugs called statins to increase HDL (and lower other forms of cholesterol). Recently, scientists have looked at utilizing dietary interventions as cost- effective methods to optimize HDL cholesterol and prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases. Below we document three research studies examining low- carb and ketogenic diets effects’ on HDL. The Impact of Carbohydrate Restriction on HDL Cholesterol. In a recent meta- analysis published in the British Journal of Nutrition by Bueno et al, researchers investigated the impacts of very- low- carbohydrate ketogenic diets (VLCKD) on key metrics of cardiovascular health including HDL cholesterol. The authors defined a VLCKD as a diet lower in 5. They included 1. 3 randomized controlled studies with a total of 1,4. All studies took place for at least a full year and all subjects included were over 1. BMI of at least 2. In each of these studies, VLCKD diets were compared to low- fat diets. Overall, 1. 2 studies including 1. VLCKD on HDL cholesterol. When assessing the data, the individuals assigned to a VLCKD achieved an average increase in HDL of 0. L. This was double the average increase in HDL of the low- fat dieters who achieved an average increase in HDL of 0. L. The first group consumed a very- low- carbohydrate, high- saturated diet with 4%, 3. This equates to about 2. The second group consumed primarily a low- fat diet with 4. Both diets contained an equal number of calories. About 5. 9% of participants completed the 1. Both groups lost similar amount of body weight and body fat. The subjects who participated in the low- fat intervention experienced an average increase in HDL cholesterol of 0. L from 1. 3. 6 mmol/L to 1. L. Subjects who suffered from moderate to severe medical conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases, and active cancer were not included. Subjects of all different weights and BMIs were included as long as they were considered healthy. Scientists then randomly selected 6. HDL cholesterol. After adjusting for demographic factors such as age, sex, and ethnicity and lifestyle factors such as smoking, researchers noted that subjects in the lowest third of carbohydrate consumption had significantly higher levels of HDL cholesterol than subjects in the highest third of carbohydrate consumption. More specifically, subjects in the lowest third of carbohydrate consumption had an HDL concentration of 1. L while subjects in the highest third had HDL concentration of 1. L. You can accomplish this through a variety of low- carbohydrate diets, including the ketogenic diet. LDL Cholesterol: Clearing the Confusion. The story behind LDL, or low- density lipoprotein, is more complicated. LDL transports cholesterol produced by your liver and cells throughout your body. Unlike HDL, LDL molecules move slowly through the bloodstream and are vulnerable to oxidizing agents known as “free radicals.” Once oxidized, LDL can easily burrow itself into the walls of your arteries (called endothelium) and impede cardiovascular function. This triggers an inflammatory response in which white blood cells called macrophages rush to eat up the LDL. Typically known as the “bad cholesterol” to its healthy counterpart HDL cholesterol, increased levels of LDL cholesterol are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). This is for two main reasons. First, LDL can be measured in two ways. The first is called LDL- C which measures the concentration of cholesterol transported by LDL in the blood. The second is called LDL- P which measures the number of LDL particles in the blood. Sometimes, there is a correlation – more LDL particles means that you can have higher levels of LDL- C. However, larger LDL molecules can grow and carry more cholesterol – leading to a discordance in which LDL- C and LDL- P are not necessarily proportional. When this happens, LDL- C and LDL- P are said to be “discordant.”For many years, LDL- C tests have been used as the primary method of measuring LDL in the blood. It is cheaper and easier to measure. Recent research has called into questioning how effective LDL- C is compared to LDL- P in precisely assessing cardiovascular risk. After reviewing cross- sectional data, a recent peer- reviewed paper from the world- renowned Framingham Heart Study stated that“In a large community- based sample, LDL- P was a more sensitive indicator of low CVD risk than either LDL- C or non- HDL- C, suggesting a potential clinical role for LDL- P as a goal of LDL management.” . That being said, LDL- C is still a useful indicator for future cardiovascular illness and ideally you want to have both low LDL- C and LDL- P. LDL can come in different forms – each with different effects on your health. A research study from 1. LDL is three times more likely to lead to heart disease than normal LDL . Additionally, more recent research shows that oxidation of LDL by substances called free radicals increases the risk of cardiovascular illness . Like LDL, VLDL transports cholesterol produced by the cells and liver throughout the body. However, VLDL particles also serve as the main transporters of triglycerides in the body. Additionally, they are composed of higher lipid and lower protein content than LDL. Because of their physical properties and functional purposes, VLDL particles are more likely than other lipoproteins to clog vessels and impair vascular functions. Research studies have noted that high levels of VLDL are associated with increased risk of artherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. In the meta- analysis by Bueno et al., low- carb diets were shown to increase HDL twice as much as low- fat diets after randomized controlled interventions. It also showed that there was a small increase in LDL- C in low- carb subjects compared to low- fat diet subjects who experienced no increase. The research study by Brinksworth et. The subjects’ ages ranged from 2. BMIs ranged from 2. Their intervention diets consisted of 1. Assuming a 2. 00. After the 1. 2 weeks intervention, researchers noted that the concentration of LDL particles decreased by 9. L 1. 18. 0 to 1. 06. L. Additionally, the particle size of LDL increased by an average of 5. However, they noted that the total number of VLDL particles decreased by 1. L to 6. 1. 7 nmol/L. In a randomized, parallel clinical trial, researchers recruited 1. The mean age of the subjects was 4. BMI was 3. 4. 4 kg/m. The second group of 6. After the intervention, researchers noted that the ketogenic diet group had decreased their VLDL by 7. VLDL by 6. 0%, and their small VLDL by 5. It is important to mention that LCKD did not lower total LDL cholesterol.

On Sunday night (4th November 2. Twittersphere went ballistic with hundreds of Tweeters critiquing and poking fun at celebrity chef Pete Evans’ daily diet which had appeared in Sunday Life, a supplement of The Sunday Age and The Sun- Herald. The item that came in for most derision from the My Day on a Plate feature was activated almonds. In fact it was so popular it had its own hashtag #activatedalmonds. So what are activated almonds and do they have any health benefits over and above ordinary almonds? As I’ve written in my article Super foods, the ultimate health foods – Almonds –“All nuts are packed with nutrition, but almonds stand out as a super nut! Eat a handful regularly and you’ll make a good investment in your heart’s health. Top of the list is the natural antioxidant, Vitamin E, and there are also good amounts of fibre and protein as well as smaller quantities of B vitamins and minerals. Surprisingly they are also a good source of calcium. What are activated almonds and are they superior? To “activate” an almond you need to soak it for 2. Proponents of activated almonds claim that raw almonds contain certain phytochemicals that prevent you from getting the full benefit of the nutrients almonds contain. They contend that by soaking the almonds for 2. This claim, as far as I have been able to ascertain, is unproven. I contacted the Nuts for Life organisation which represents the Australian tree nut industry and they say that there's almost no research on almonds or any other nut that indicates whether “activation” actually improves the digestibility and nutrition of the nut. According to Nuts for Life, “activation is like sprouting of grains (wheat or barley grass) or sprouting of seeds (mung bean sprouts or alfalfa sprouts). Think alfalfa, mung bean and pea sprouts that we use in salads. The Essenes used to make bread from sprouted grains and many cultures soak brown and white rice before cooking and we all know that you have to soak legumes like chickpeas to reduce the cooking time. Almonds are also often soaked to make it easier to remove the skins before using them in cooking e. In a marginal diet like that in rural India where soaking of almonds overnight is traditional, these small nutrient differences gained from soaking the almonds may be important. In the average balanced Aussie diet where we eat fish, meat, vegetables, whole grains, it probably doesn't matter. My take on activated almonds. Almonds, whether raw or activated, are a nutritious food and worth including in your daily diet. I have them listed as one of my Top 2. Super Foods. If you choose to go to the added expense of buying “activated” almonds or choose to take the time and trouble to activate your own that’s your choice. Either way they’re delicious and nutritious. The finding is important because the consumption of white rice in the United States has increased dramatically in the past few decades, and about 1. Americans have type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health say eating two or more servings of brown rice weekly seems to be associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. On the other hand, they report, eating five or more servings of white rice per week is associated with an increased risk.
Create your free weight loss diet plan in Phase 2 of The Lose Weight Diet. You may have heard that brown rice is more nutritious than white rice, but are left wondering if there's really a big difference between the two. Three billion people on this planet depend on rice for over half of their daily total calorie intake. Most of these people eat white rice. What about brown rice. Qi Sun, MD, now an instructor of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and colleagues at Harvard estimate that replacing 5. Replacing the same amount of white rice with other whole grains, such as barley and wheat, is associated with a 3. The study is published in the online journal Archives of Internal Medicine. The researchers say the study is the first to specifically examine white rice vs. The authors say that more than 7. U. S. The word lemur derives from the word lemures (ghosts or spirits) from Roman mythology and was first used to describe a slender loris due to its nocturnal habits and slow pace, but was later applied to the primates on Madagascar. As with other strepsirrhine primates, such as lorises, pottos, and galagos (bush babies), lemurs share resemblance with basal primates. In this regard, lemurs are often confused with ancestral primates, when in actuality, lemurs did not give rise to monkeys and apes, but evolved independently. Due to Madagascar's highly seasonal climate, lemur evolution has produced a level of species diversity rivaling that of any other primate group. Until shortly after humans arrived on the island around 2,0. Today, there are nearly 1. Even the higher- level taxonomy is disputed, with some experts preferring to place most lemurs within the infraorder. Lemuriformes, while others prefer Lemuriformes to contain all living strepsirrhines, placing all lemurs in the superfamily. Lemuroidea and all lorises and galagos in the superfamily Lorisoidea. However, their brain- to- body size ratio is smaller than that of anthropoid primates, and among many other traits they share with other strepsirrhine primates, they have a . Lemurs are generally the most social of the strepsirrhine primates and communicate more with scents and vocalizations than with visual signals. Many lemur adaptations are in response to Madagascar's highly seasonal environment. Lemurs have relatively low basal metabolic rates and may exhibit seasonal breeding, dormancy (such as hibernation or torpor), or female social dominance. Most eat a wide variety of fruits and leaves, while some are specialists. Although many share similar diets, different species of lemur share the same forests by differentiating niches. Lemur research during the 1. Although field observations trickled in from early explorers, modern studies of lemur ecology and behavior did not begin in earnest until the 1. Initially hindered by political instability and turmoil on Madagascar during the mid- 1. Research facilities like the Duke Lemur Center have provided research opportunities under more controlled settings. Lemurs are important for research because their mix of ancestral characteristics and traits shared with anthropoid primates can yield insights on primate and human evolution. However, many lemur species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and hunting. Although local traditions generally help protect lemurs and their forests, illegal logging, widespread poverty, and political instability hinder and undermine conservation efforts. Because of these threats and their declining numbers, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considers lemurs to be the world's most endangered mammals, noting that—as of 2. Etymology. Carl Linnaeus, the founder of modern binomial nomenclature, gave lemurs their name as early as 1. Systema Naturae. He included three species under the genus Lemur: Lemur tardigradus (the red slender loris, now known as Loris tardigradus), Lemur catta (the ring- tailed lemur), and Lemur volans (the Philippine colugo, now known as Cynocephalus volans). Lemures dixi hos, quod noctu imprimis obambulant, hominibus quodanmodo similes, & lento passu vagantur. The name derives from the Latin term lemures, which refers to specters or ghosts that were exorcised during the Lemuria festival of ancient Rome. Lemurs for sale. An overview of owning a Lemur and Lemurs for sale. However, Dunkel et al. Like other strepsirrhine primates, such as lorises, pottos, and galagos, they share ancestral (or plesiomorphic) traits with early primates. Although the term "lemur" was first intended for slender lorises, it was soon limited to the endemic Malagasy primates, which have been known as "lemurs" ever since. In this regard, lemurs are popularly confused with ancestral primates; however, lemurs did not give rise to monkeys and apes (simians). Instead, they evolved independently in isolation on Madagascar. A more recent hypothesis is that lemurs descended from lorisoids (loris- like) primates. This is supported by comparative studies of the cytochrome b gene and the presence of the strepsirrhine toothcomb in both groups. Instead of being the direct ancestors of lemurs, the adapiforms may have given rise to both the lemurs and lorisoids, a split that would be supported by molecular phylogenetic studies. The later split between lemurs and lorises is thought to have occurred approximately 6. Since ancestral lemurs are thought to have originated in Africa around 6. Mozambique Channel, a deep channel between Africa and Madagascar with a minimum width of about 5. In 1. 91. 5, paleontologist. William Diller Matthew noted that the mammalian biodiversity on Madagascar (including lemurs) can only be accounted for by random rafting events, where very small populations rafted from nearby Africa on tangled mats of vegetation, which get flushed out to sea from major rivers. In the 1. 94. 0s, American paleontologist George Gaylord Simpson coined the term . The ocean currents were shown to be even stronger than today, which would have pushed a raft along faster, shortening the trip to 3. As the continental plates drifted northward, the currents gradually changed, and by 2. Malagasy fauna from mainland Africa. They were also spared from having to compete with monkeys, which evolved later. The intelligence, aggression, and deceptiveness of monkeys gave them an advantage over other primates in exploiting the environment. Distribution and diversity. Lemurs have adapted to fill many open ecological niches since making their way to Madagascar. Their diversity in both behavior and morphology (outward appearance) rivals that of the monkeys and apes found elsewhere in the world. Ranging in size from the 3. Madame Berthe's mouse lemur, the world's smallest primate, to the recently extinct 1. Archaeoindris fontoynonti, lemurs evolved diverse forms of locomotion, varying levels of social complexity, and unique adaptations to the local climate. Lemurs lack any shared traits that make them stand out from all other primates. These traits can include seasonal fat storage, hypometabolism (including torpor and hibernation), small group sizes, low encephalization (relative brain size), cathemerality (activity both day and night), and strict breeding seasons. Extreme resource limitations and seasonal breeding are also thought to have given rise to three other relatively common lemur traits: female social dominance, sexual monomorphism, and male–male competition for mates involving low levels of agonism, such as sperm competition. However, early settlers quickly converted the forests to rice paddies and grassland through slash- and- burn agriculture (known locally as tavy), restricting lemurs to approximately 1. Today, the diversity and complexity of lemur communities increases with floral diversity and precipitation and is highest in the rainforests of the east coast, where precipitation and floral diversity are also at their highest. Despite their adaptations for weathering extreme adversity, habitat destruction and hunting have resulted in lemur populations declining sharply, and their diversity has diminished, with the recent extinction of at least 1. Most of the approximately 1. Unless trends change, extinctions are likely to continue. Until recently, giant lemurs existed on Madagascar. Now represented only by recent or subfossil remains, they were modern forms that were once part of the rich lemur diversity that has evolved in isolation. Some of their adaptations were unlike those seen in their living relatives. All 1. 7 extinct lemurs were larger than the extant (living) forms, some weighing as much as 2. Not only were they unlike the living lemurs in both size and appearance, they also filled ecological niches that either no longer exist or are now left unoccupied. Large parts of Madagascar, which are now devoid of forests and lemurs, once hosted diverse primate communities that included more than 2. Taxonomic classification and phylogeny. From a taxonomic standpoint, the term . The term is now used in the colloquial sense in reference to all Malagasy primates. Lemur taxonomy is controversial, and not all experts agree, particularly with the recent increase in the number of recognized species. In one taxonomy, the infraorder Lemuriformes contains all living strepsirrhines in two superfamilies, Lemuroidea for all lemurs and Lorisoidea for the lorisoids (lorisids and galagos). In another taxonomy published by Colin Groves, the aye- aye was placed in its own infraorder, Chiromyiformes, while the rest of the lemurs were placed in Lemuriformes and the lorisoids in Lorisiformes. Although it is generally agreed that the aye- aye is the most basal member of the lemur clade, the relationship between the other four families is less clear since they diverged during a narrow 1. Late Eocene (4. 2 mya) and into the Oligocene (3. One of the greatest challenges has been the classification of the aye- aye, which has been a topic of debate up until very recently. Until Richard Owen published a definitive anatomical study in 1. Daubentonia) was a primate, rodent, or marsupial. However, the placement of the aye- aye within the order Primates remained problematic until very recently. Based on its anatomy, researchers have found support for classifying the genus Daubentonia as a specialized indriid, a sister group to all strepsirrhines, and as an indeterminate taxon within the order Primates. Molecular tests have now shown Daubentoniidae is basal to all Lemuriformes. To further complicate the issue, several Paleogene fossil primates from outside Madagascar, such as Bugtilemur, have been classified as lemurs. Formerly grouped in the same family due to similarities in dentition, they are no longer considered to be closely related due to genetic studies. The most noticeable revisions included the gradual split of a broadly defined genus Lemur into separate genera for the ring- tailed lemur, ruffed lemurs, and brown lemurs due to a host of morphological differences. They likewise have a more diminutive cerebrum than equivalently measured simians, huge olfactory projections for scent, a vomeronasal organ to discover pheromones, and a bicornuate uterus with an epitheliochorial placenta. Their eyes hold a reflective layer to enhance their night vision, and their eye attachments incorporate a ring of bone around the eye, however they fail to offer a divider of slender bone behind it. Strepsirrhine primates process their own distinctive vitamin C, thus don't need to get it from their eating regimens. Lemurs have sharp- clawed prehensile feet, which they use to hold on to tree branches. They include the minutest world's primate, the Madame Berthe's mouse lemur, which is the size of the Indri and weighs about 3. They somehow resemble squirrels and monkeys. They are omnivorous in nature, extracting their food from surrounding trees, but occasionally foraging forest floor for grub. The most common species on the island of Madagascar are; the woolly lemur, ring- tail lemur, russet mouse lemur, white ruffed lemur and the Aye Aye lemur. Macaco Lemur and Slader Lemur. They have overlapped and interbred in many locations. Red Ruffed Lemur. This is a medium- sized lemur that is very different socially and prefers isolation. They do not even share feeding zones with the other species. It features a very different physical appearance and behaviour from other lemurs. It resembles numerous small species of monkeys. Consequently, many classify it as a primate. Not much information is known about this species. Collared Brown Lemurthis is medium in size lemur that is brown in color and consists of 1. The Collared Brown Lemur is the best known of the species. Indri Lemur is one of the biggest Lemurs in the world. These lemurs seem to ape many humanistic behaviors and have very distinctive characters. It has a distinctively ringed tail and a body that is uniquely different from the others. It is also one of the most intelligent of all lemur species. The ring- tailed lemur is the most commonly known and studied species. This lemur's tail has distinctive black and white ring marks, but with a gray body fur and ears with white tufts. Due to its distinct long middle fingers, the Aya Aye lemur appears to be different from the others. Ideally, these temperatures should be between 6. The ring- tailed lemur for example, requires a cage enclosure of 2. Island enclosures on the other hand have a 3. The perimeter moat wall's water should have a minimum depth of 0. The moat should have an upward slope facing the land. It is advisable that keepers have a good knowledge of handling and husbandry techniques of the species. A second appointed competent handler should be available just in case of owner absenteeism or incapacitation. Breeding pairs should also be kept in isolation for guaranteed offspring paternity. Fruits should include bananas, apples, oranges and grapes that are relatively available all year round. Seasonal fruits should also be provided. Vegetables should include cucumbers, green beans, broccoli and celery. Feed Lemurs in captivity once or two times daily. It is important to practice diet rotation to provide variety. Chopping food into equal portions enables each group member to access preferred food that can comfortably fit into their small mouths. Keepers are supposed to give several times throughout the day and in different tree levels and locations. This effectively restricts aggression and crowding around feeding zones. Diet selectivity and obesity may result from chronic overfeeding. Thus, feeding is planned such that left over or uneaten food should not exceed 1. Those owning a lemur as a pet or keeping it in captivity, regardless of which type, need to administer annual frequent veterinary health checks to these animals and make any necessary treatments. These checks include. Regular fecal check- ups for worm egg floats and frequent deworming treatment for various worm infestations. Annual tests for Tuberculosis infection. Tests for blood sugar levels to check for obesity due to weight gain, and iron levels to test for haematochromatosis Frequent checks for microchips and whether they are still in the location of administration. Sanitize and clean the enclosures frequently. Check for and remove snails or slugs as they present the risk of Rat lungworm infection. It is advisable to keep cats away from lemurs to avoid possible contamination. Dermatophytosis and Herpes Virus infection/cold sores from human subjects should also be kept in check. Paleo For PCOS?
